Mr. Davis - Visual and Media Arts
Jay Davis is a Visual and Media Arts teacher with Community Health Advocates School (CHAS), one of three small schools at Augustus Hawkins High in South Los Angeles. Jay was a Lead Teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District's three-year Media Arts Initiative, and is a contributor to the national development of media arts as an entirely new discipline within US K-12 education. Jay’s photography has been featured in international newspapers such as Corriere della Sera and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, used by non-profit organizations such as the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, and published in “Cuba Represent!: Cuban Arts, State Power, and the Making of New Revolutionary Cultures”. Other mediums and techniques include screen-printing and murals, the latter of which have produced in collaborative projects in Chiapas, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Havana, Cuba, and Jay’s curriculum highlights arts therapy in social work as an extension of the school’s career focus. Jay is a graduate of LAUSD, earned a BA in Art at UC Santa Cruz.
